Catalyst gives an overview of some of the work The Engineering and Technology Board (ETB) has been doing to promote engineering and technology.

Workshadowing Scheme takes off
Two promising placements in the highly successful workshadowing scheme took place at AMEC on 7th June. This joint scheme, supported by the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services, The ETB and the Institute of Career Guidance, involves Careers Advisors undertaking short-term placements in science, engineering and technology (SET) companies. The scheme brings employers and careers staff closer together and allows Careers Advisors a better insight and understanding into the roles and opportunities within the SET sector.

Professional Development System launched
The ETB has been working with Skilsure and six Engineering Institutions to launch a pilot Professional Development System (PDS). The six Engineering Institutions now provide future and current professional engineers with a monitoring and target setting system to help with with their Initial and Continuous Professional Development.

Science Museum's Plans to Inspire
The Science Museum's Inspired project in Swindon, is one of six candidates bidding for £50 million from the Big Lottery, to be voted for by the British public later this year via a televised vote. The funding is vital to secure Inspired's future as a brand new type of interactive museum.

Due to open in 2010, Inspired will be an important stimulus for young people, essential in shaping the UK's science future by providing a place for inspiring scientists, engineers, inventors, creators, and designers.

Speakers confirmed for Skills Conference
Claire Curtis-Thomas MP has been secured as chair for The ETB's 2nd Annual Skills Conference being held on 10th October. The conference which has 10 confirmed speakers from organisations such as the Association of Colleges, the Science Learning Centres Network and the Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies Alliance is now supported by the EEF and is being sponsored by Edexcel.

Delegates are already booking places for the conference which is relevant to senior managers from education and industry responsible for influencing policy, strategy, marketing and funding of skills. Click below to find out more, or here to book your place.

i-Seminars tool proved invaluable
A recent case study completed with the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) has recognised the i-Seminars tool as invaluable. i-Seminars is an advanced web conferencing tool which allows organisations to run live interactive events for large audiences: enabling them to participate as individuals, both contributing and questioning in real time.

STEMNET, the new name of SETNET
On 11 June 2007, SETNET changed its business name to STEMNET. The new name represents and reflects the importance of each of the 'STEM' subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and the work STEMNET and its partners do to enhance and enrich the whole of the STEM curriculum.

The ETB looks ahead
The ETB Annual General Meeting, to be held on 11th July, will be asked to endorse changes to The ETB's articles of association that will enable representation on its Board by the Professional Engineering Institutions. The change is intended to make The ETB more inclusive through enabling the Institutions to participate directly in the work of The ETB, and to improve communication between The ETB, the Institutions and registrants.

Under the proposals, the three largest Institutions will each nominate a member of their Council or their CEO to the Board. Two further Board members will be elected from the remaining Institutions and the Royal Academy of Engineering will also have a seat.
