On the 5th of December 2007, the ETB launched 'Engineering UK 2007', its annual statistical review of the engineering and technology labour market.
The latest edition of the review, which is the most comprehensive to date, details a number of positive findings within the education sector, including a slow but steady growth in the number of pupils sitting Chemistry, Physics and Maths A Levels. However, it also reveals significant challenges to UK engineering.

From the 7th to the 16th March, the ETB will be working in partnership with the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BA) to deliver National Science and Engineering Week, a ten day celebration of science, engineering and technology which will see children and adults across the UK organising science and engineering events.
One of the themes this year will be 'The Big Question' so if you know any young inquisitive minds who are keen to find out the meaning of life, how to save the planet, or whether aliens exist, this is your chance to help put their questions to Britain's leading scientists and engineers.

The profile of Engineering Technicians and their invaluable contribution to the engineering sector, and in turn the UK economy, has increased notably over the past few years. However, the issues relating to the supply and demand of these highly skilled professionals remain steeped in anecdote rather than robust data.
On November 7th, the ETB held a stakeholder workshop on exactly these issues, with attendees including the Sector Skills Councils, Professional Engineering Institutions, other professional bodies and key figures in academia and industry.

The ETB has joined forces with the Nuffield Foundation to launch a new scheme of Engineering Bursaries which will provide students in Further Education with funded, high-quality experience of working within engineering-related industry during their summer vacation.
The scheme aims to give students experience of working on focused projects alongside industrial engineers, and to appreciate the range of skills needed to work in industry. In this way the scheme will contribute to the enhancement not only of students' technical skills, but their employability; as well as completing project work that is of benefit to the host companies.

The ETB recently completed its regular biennial survey of registered engineers in association with the Engineering Council UK (ECUK). The survey, which has been carried out every two years since 2003, reveals that the median total earnings for both Chartered Engineers (CEng) and Incorporated Engineers (IEng) have risen by approximately ten per cent since 2005. It also reveals a median increase of six and a half per cent for Engineering Technicians.
The survey also demonstrates that the number of professional engineers who have their registration and institutional membership fees paid by employers, is edging gradually upwards from 50% in 2005 to 53% in 2007. This suggests that many employers continue to regard professional registration as a significant benefit to the workforce.
