Encouraging Investment in Technology Businesses.
November 2006
This report follows on from 'Frontiers of Innovation: Wealth Creation from Science, Engineering and Technology in the UK', which made a range of proposals and recommendations on the policy framework which will enhance the prospects for wealth creation from science, engineering and technology (SET) in the UK.
It focuses on the relationships between SET-related businesses and financial institutions. The Group is drawn from technology businesses, venture capital and financial institutions who came together initially in 2003 to highlight the potential for wealth creation from SET in time to advise Government as part of the 2004 Comprehensive Spending Review. We believe that the relations between SET-related businesses and financial institutions deserve attention as part of the drive to make UK business more competitive, in a world where traditional and new competitors make the need to innovate ever more urgent.
This report identifies opportunities for the Higher Education Sector to re-visit
areas of financial research in UK business schools and universities. In addition,
it makes recommendations to business and industry, financial institutions and the Government.

Foundation Degrees were introduced to integrate academic and work-based learning through close collaboration between employers and programme providers. However, aneccotal evidence has suggested that the level of employer engagement in the degrees is variable. Consequently, the ETB, alongside Foundation Degree Forward, commissioned a significatn piece of quanitative and qualitateive research to determine the reality of the relationship.

The importance of intermediate vocational skills has been reflected in the work of Sector Skills Councils and the recent publication of the Leitch Review. However there are fears that this activity is being undermined by low demand for intermediate skills both from young people and employers. The ETB in conjunction with the SEEDA has commissioned a study to look at supply and demand for training in South East England.
December 2007
The ETB and LSC recntly conducted a research project aimed at identifying the state of engineering and technology within Further Education. The report found a 26% drop in learner numbers including further education and apprenticeships - within engineering, manufacturing and technology from 2002/03 to 2004/05.
