The aim of this report was to determine how Year 9 students (and indirectly their adult influencers) could be better supported with advice and background information relating to career opportunities in the SET sector. The project also sought to determine the relative impact of three key variables, namely gender, level of attainment and social background. It provides statistically significant research evidence capable of informing the content development process of the ETB SET careers portal.

This survey explores the views of Advanced Modern Apprentices, Technicians and Engineers, in addition to employers in relation to the titles ‘technician’ and ‘engineer’, to find out how people see these titles and what qualifications they feel it is necessary to obtain in order to reach certain professional standards. It also examines the value of institutional membership and how this relates to the promotion of professional standards.

This study documents the range of views that teachers hold about engineering in schools and colleges, including how three subjects in particular – science, technology and mathematics (STM) – contribute to the promotion of careers in engineering. It also assesses methods of improvement in STM education encompassing cross-curricular development and augmentation, learning styles and delivery techniques, and student motivational approaches.

This report examines and critically reviews the literature relating to current careers guidance practice and its relationship to SET. Containing abstracts of the relevant literature and the linked research questions that it generates, the report is also designed to give guidance and purpose to future SET programmes.

This report details findings from a research project designed to provide evidence relating to the early experiences in business and industry of graduate engineers and technologists. A specific focus of this research relates to the views of such graduates about the ‘completeness’ of their education – the extent to which undergraduate or graduate studies prepared them for their early career experiences.
