Careers Support
The ETB works in partnership with business and industry, Government, education and the science and engineering professions to improve the perception of science, engineering and technology (SET) in the UK.
One of the key issues faced when trying to improve the often negative perception of SET is supplying good quality unbiased careers information about the SET sector to those who advise young people. From the recommendations and findings of our Careers Advisory Panel the ETB have developed a number of careers resources for pupils, teachers and careers advisors such as the enginuity website. We have also launched a number of pilots for teachers and careers advisors to improve their perceptions of SET careers. A joint Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Service / ETB / Institute of Career Guidance work shadowing scheme will involve careers advisors undertaking short-term placements in SET companies. For information on undertaking a placement contact the ETB.
We have a Department for Trade and Industry funded pilot to deliver opportunities for lecturers, delivering level 3 engineering programmes, to update their knowledge and skills, as well as develop working partnerships with industry, through delivering high quality structured placements of 6 to 12 weeks in science, engineering and technology companies. Schools and colleges will receive £150 per day to cover each placement.
We have now filled all the places for this scheme and during 2007 will be evaluating it success. A report and case studies from this project is due to be published in November. For further information please contact us.
