New ETB Engineering Bursaries in Association with the Nuffield Foundation

The ETB has joined forces with the Nuffield Foundation to launch a new scheme of Engineering Bursaries which will provide students in further education with funded, high-quality experience of working within engineering-related industry during their summer vacation.

The Nuffield Foundation has run a highly-respected School and College Science Bursary scheme for some years and the new Nuffield / ETB Engineering Bursary scheme will be run to the same model, ensuring that it uses the best practice from years of experience.

The scheme aims to give students experience of working on focussed project alongside industrial engineers, and to appreciate the range of skills needed to work in industry. In this way the scheme will contribute to the enhancement not only of students’ technical skills, but their employability; as well as completing project work that is of benefit to the host companies. The ETB is specifically encouraging SMEs to host students, so that the scheme may contribute to the strengthening of the UK’s engineering supply chain.

In 2008, its pilot year, the Engineering Bursaries will be run in North East England, English East Midlands, Wales and Northern Ireland. Students in all regions can continue to apply for Nuffield Science Bursaries as in previous years. The scheme is supported by the Learning and Skills Council in the English North East and East Midlands.
